Fuller Family Cemetery is located within Fuller Park, which is located off Gibson road in Athens, Texas. The two people buried here are enclosed with an iron gate with a large iron fence around them. The only visible graves are that of Medford Lee Fuller (1875-1944) and his wife Virginia McClelland Fuller (? -1938). Fuller park as been shrouded with mystery ever since Mr. Fuller erected the park in 1938 (after the death of Virginia Fuller). Fuller Park is said to house one of the five entrances to the underground network of tunnels that reside under the city of Athens, Texas. Rumors regarding Fuller Park are in great abundance. They range between entrances into a tunnel system all the way to the “virgin stone” fence that surrounds the park.

Monkey Cages: The Monkey cages are one of the most prominent landmarks within Fuller Park. They are a hot spot for rituals and a place where people go to get a good scare. During production of the documentary we along with others discovered the remnants of a ritual that had taken place at the monkey cages not long before we arrived. As part of the ritual pentacles were spray painted on 4 trees and the roof of the monkey cages. The trees that had been spray-painted with pentacles and the roof of the monkey cage formed a star, with an alter in the center of the area. The alter consisted of charred wood and salt. Many people claim to have seen mutilated animal carcasses (dogs, cats and sometimes cows) inside and around the Monkey cages within Fuller Park. However, I haven’t personally witnessed animal carcasses, only the ritual stated above.
Fuller Grave Plot: The first thing you’ll notice upon entering Fuller Park is the plot where the Fuller’s remains are buried. The graves are enclosed by two large chains that stretch from four posts made of virgin stone (Iron ore). Unfortunately, the graves have been badly vandalized by the locals. The tombstones have been kicked over and spray-painted with various obscenities. It’s really sad to see the graves in such condition. It is VERY common to see melted candle wax around the grave and tombstone of the Fuller plat. Every time we’ve been to Fuller Park there is always broken candles of various colors (red, white and green mainly). Some of the candles are burned at both ends, but all are smashed and broken after the ritual.
Barn and Tow truck: Not many people go deep enough into Fuller Park to see the barn and Tow truck. The barn has a lot of boxes full of Christmas ornaments, a mattress, busted shell of an old TV among other weathered trash. The barn is VERY unstable so be EXTREMELY cautions if you happen to go out there. I would not recommend that anyone go inside the barn. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you see it. The Tow truck is very interesting! It’s an old model truck that’s been gutted by time and trespassers. The doors are heavily rusted but it’s still possible to open the doors. Most of the glass is busted out and there is a large crane mounted on the back with metal cable spiraling out past the vehicle, covered with leaves and dirt.
I’ve personally been in Fuller Park several times at various time of day. Being in Fuller Park during the day is comfortable because it’s easy to see where you are going. The tree bustle with life and sway peacefully in the breeze. A lot of people I’ve talked to go to Fuller Park during the daytime to relax. However, night is polar opposite.. There is a very large bat population in Fuller Park. Mainly because there isn’t a lot of people in the area to bother them. It is very common to hear screeching and rustling in the leaves while in Fuller Park at nighttime. I believe this is the type of noises thrill seekers feed on to get their adrenaline buzz. The park is much more active during the night. While filming this documentary we encountered some pretty bizarre activity in Fuller Park at night. I won’t talk about it too much… I just want people to be careful if they decide to go out to the park at night

Sure! I grew up in Tool, TX. The cages at Fuller Park did have monkeys at one time. As you know, Fuller Park was originally intended to be a zoo. The legend of Monkey Bridge started when locals thought that monkeys escaped from the train as they were shipping them to the park. The bridge got a much more sinister reputation when a man (Rick Heriage) was found murdered at the bottom of the bridge some time later.

Monkey Road (and Thunder Bridge) had to do with the legend of a circus train breaking down beneath the bridge, and monkeys escaping into the woods. No where NEAR Fuller Park. Thunder Bridge was demolished a few years ago, and the local powers that be decided not to replace it ( poor part of town ). I grew up in Athens, explored every nook and cranny (especially Dilsey Creek – which runs through the Athens Country Club), and never even heard about tunnels, much less found one. The Rev. Fuller was pastor of First Baptist Church of Athens for many years, and would be appalled to know that his burial site was the object of so much speculation by bored people with spectacular imaginations. Athens is a very QUIET town, and when there’s nothing to do, you either make it up – or drive an hour to Dallas….

They call them monkey cages because the legend says an old woman who used to have pet monkeys kept them there. They went wild, and now their ‘spirits’ are black monkeys that stalk people who go there at night… It’s fun. 🙂

You mention that Fuller “erected the park” in 1938 but the “park” itself was built much earlier than that and was actually the Henderson County Poor Farm. Fuller bought the property as it was with buildings, fence, gates, etc and turned the superintendents quarters into the home of him and his wife. The walls and gate were, I believe, built during the depression as were most structures with this same stone around much of the south. The “monkey cages” could also be remnants of a jail that was most likely once on the property. Dallas has whats left of its “poor farm” and the jail has an article about it dating back to the late 1800’s that mentions the installation of new steel cages for law breakers. Therefore, much like achems razor, the simplest answer is usually always the correct one. Happy ghost hunting…..lol

I think the idea of “monkey” cages comes from “Monkey Road” on the west side of town. First you cross “Thunder Bridge” – an old wooden bridge that sounds like thunder when you drive across it. The story was that a circus came through town years prior and monkeys got loose on that road and at night you could still hear the monkeys. Why a circus would be on that back road was never explained, but the story-teller would need to stop to relieve himself next to a gate, where he would move the squeaky gate back and forth rapidly, then run back to the car saying “Did you hear them?”
This prank dates back to the 70’s or before and I’ve seen posts on other forums that claim that Monkey Road and Thunder Bridge are right by Fuller Park.

Ok we know people that live here in Athens so we came from Mesquite Tx. near Dallas Tx. to check out the rumors about Fuller park and the Henderson County hospital also the Monkey Bridge we went in all after dark. The Fuller park was interesting and very wierd at some times but came up with nothin to prove it was hunted we even found the big monkey cage and went in it. Now on the other hand the Henderson County hospital was a diffrent story there is somethin there but we could not figure out what. The monkey bridge was very cool and u actually thought the train was going to hit the bridge but did not see any ghost or hear anything to prove it was hunted. for one thing monkey road and thunder bridge are not by fullers park, the monkey cages didnt get their name from this, they are actual monkey cages that fuller kept his monkeys in. My husband has slept in one of these. as for the tunnel entrances, their is one at fullers park, one at the country club, one at Athens Cemetery, one at the Court house, and I dont remember where the other one is. I have gone in fullers park many of times, and have seen, felt, experienced some very weird things. I have not gone in the tunnels though, never been brave enough to do that.

Me and a small group of friends have been to the henderson county hospital many times also known as the wolfe duphorne at one time. The original one was built in 1938 but was rebuilt where it stands now in 1940. We have many (EVP’s) that we have gathered from there and a few pictures that we were very suprised by, also we have noticed that sometimes it seems peaceful and at other times it seems so creepy you don’t even want to walk down the hallway. But i would say with all the evidence that we have gathered it is a very haunted site with many spirits!!

today me and some people went to the old cemetery and got spooked when we played back the video and saw orbs here and at the hospital… when we looked closely it looked like a man , there was at least three or so but that gave me all i needed to know. also monkey bridge scared us for the first time tonight cause when we videoed it all our memory was deleted on my video camera….. there are all kinds of wierd things that happen, but tonight was the worst! we saw lights comin but they were hazy and we didnt know where they were coming from. last year in the monkey cages we took pics in there and there was an orb on my face of a monkey when we find the pic il try to upload it to this sight!!!! goodluck!!!

I have been in the tunnels under athens. And i would not recomend any one to go there alone if you even dare too. i’ve walked about a mile through the tunnel and it’s old stone like what is around fuller park just bigger stones. There are some very werid “things” that do go on down there. Also there is still a colt that runs through these tunnels they do not speak or make any noise what so ever. You can find blood stains, candles, chains, and some kind of bones of animals, pentagrams, all kinds of crazy things. And about Fuller’s Park, the ideas of running around the park at night are not a smart idea. There are rituals taking place at certain times of night you might go in and not come back out from the stories and from what i have PERSONALLY seen myself. I went into the park and at the time i came back out there was a woman walking a small boy about 5 down into the park with a dog and as the woman and child passed me the boy had said he was scared and the woman grabbed his arm and told him it was ok and that she had candy down here. three months later i seen the little boy’s picture somewhere saying something about missing for the past 60 days. Needless to say i’ve never been back but planning to go again soon.

I don’t think he went in there without some form of illumination. I went with some friends earlier tonight around 1:30 to 2:30am and there is NO way you could navigate through there without a light. We chilled for a little while in one of the monkey cages. Lot’s of spray paint but no hard evidence of any rituals there. Very strange feeling being there though. And heard lot’s of noises which i’m thinking were the bats mentioned. Did not run into any other people either.

He has told me of Medford Lee Fuller, a long time preacher of Athens Baptist Church supposedly even though there is no record of him being a preacher there, who founded Fuller Park in honor of his wife who had passed. The legend goes Mr. Fuller based the town on Satanism. He has monkey cages behind his house where he beat the monkeys and used them for his ritual sacrifices. Mr. and Mrs. Fuller are buried within Fuller Park in Athens, the site of his home, rituals, monkey cages, and many things he left behind. I’ve been told there are tunnel;ways beneath the city leading to the courthouse in the center that are shaped into a pentagran (one entry at the Countryclub and one at the park, the other 3 have not been found). A rumor goes that if you park ur vehicle in a certain part of the park and set your keys on the hood monkey paw prints will start forming in the ground heading straight for you; if you don’t grab your keys quickly the “ghost monkeys” will steal them and take them to the woods. you’ll have to search from there. Stephen has never tried to scare me and he swears he witnessed this happening firsthand along with some friends of his. The graveyard where Mr. and Mrs. Fuller are buried are gaurded by heavy chains and columns that stay cold constently even on a hot summer day; also a site where a lot of unexplainable things have happened. People that have wandered into the tunnel ways have found bones, candles, blood, and other ritualistic objects within them. It is said that many cults have formed within the town and for their practices inside Fuller Park. There is NO record of the Fullers ever residing in Athens. None of these rumors have i witnessed myself. however, I plan on doing some siting of my own and possibly get proof they happened with EVP and Video recordings. This is all very interesting….I am a native of Athens, Texas. There were tales back in the 60’s about Fuller Park but they have been really embellished through the years. One statement
that I want to clarify is that Wolf-Duphorne hospital is on Pinkerton street across from the old Safeway store(now a branch of the Court House). It was never the Henderson County Hospital on Bryson Street. Several of these tales have been combined and for people that have lived there all their lives, they know some of these things just aren’t true. I am forwarding this article to someone who was an owner of Fuller Park and get their prospective on it. The tunnel thing is a very new tale. Never heard that before. Fuller Park was talked about by teenagers during my high school years but as I said these stories have been embellished tremendously….

my family is from athens,and i grew up there.i have been to fullers park, been in the monkey cages and saw the graves, never saw anything. i think most people that go ther and say that they saw or felt something may have, but only because they, like me, grew up on all the local legeands, and have convinced themselfs that something is there. i dont know if there is or not, but it sure makes for a good gohst story dont you think!!!

one thing i have hear from many people is that fuller had claimed to be a resident of athens and the first preacher of the babtist church. i have found that there is no record of him residing or preaching in athens.

In 1916 Dr. M. L. Fuller became pastor of the Baptist church in Athens. He had a congregation of 387 members. This year Mrs. Easterland served as the president of the Ladies Aid Society.
The First Baptist Church did not have a baptistery until the last few years of this church’s existence. During this period, the baptismal services were held in Richardson’s Pond. When the church finally did get a baptistery, water had to be carried in from a well just outside the church. The job of carrying in the water fell on Edwin Hart.
Disaster struck the Baptist church in 1917. The church building was destroyed by fire. While the new church building was being built, the Baptist congregation met in the County Court House and in the old theater building. This theater building was located where George’s Jewelry is now. The Christian Church very graciously consented to let us use their baptistery during this period.
Because of the fire that destroyed the church and another that burned Dr. Fuller’s home several years later, there are very few old records left.
The present structure was erected in 1918. It is of brick and concrete construction and stands as a very strong building today. It continues to be a monument to Dr. M. L. Fuller who served as the pastor at the time it was built, and continued his ministry for approximately a quarter of a century.

My family settled in the Athens area in the mid 1800’s. We have been involved in the banking, construction, and development of Athens pretty much since its beginnings. We are active in the Henderson County Historical Society, and Athens history in general. I am currently in my mid fifties. I heard the tales of the tunnels that interconnect throughout the Athens area also. I queried my elders and was told it was just a tale. This was when I was around 15 or 16 years old. So, approximately 40 years ago I looked for an entrance to a tunnel at the Country Club, one at Fuller Park, one at a residence on Bryson Street directly across from the hospital. There was no need in looking at the Court House because if there ever was one there it wasnt there any more. I have never been aware of any other locations. The locations all had one thing in common, they were all built of the local native stone and each one had a storm cellar. If you are from around here you know that storm cellars are very uncommon. The residence across from the hospital has since been torn down and the storm cellar filled in. The Country Club did indeed catch fire and was remodeled and the storm cellar was removed and filled in. There was indeed a storm cellar at Fuller Park at one time, giving credence to it being the local poor farm. I havent been there in years but it could still be there? It wouldnt suprise me if the original court house had a storm cellar as well. It seems there was one fairly close to public buildings in that day and time. It is my belief that someone started the whole tale by answering his or her childrens questions about “whats in that door that goes underground” by telling them it was a tunnel entrance and it grew from that to them all connecting, etc, etc, etc. As to Fuller Park, it is scary, but just because of the real live people who go there. As has been said above it is not bad during the day but there are indeed Satanic/Cult worshiping things that go on out there. When I was a kid one of my best friends lived right across the Old Palestine Hwy from Fuller Park. We camped out in there numerous times and scared the Bejesus out of a lot of people who came in the park at night. It was just fun back then. I wouldnt recommend any such thing nowadays.

Thank you Bullet Bob for taking the time to share what you know. There is no dobt some bad things have happened around some of these areas and that Fuller’s Park attracks certain types of people and activites. But I have found no proof of the past rumors being true.

I lived in Athens from 1981 to 1990, and have head all these stories. One story i have heard but have not found any proof of it was a person named Dull averate or something like that was one of the original founders of Athens , and she was a witch supposedly. Also I will ad that various cities and towns are ranked for satanism, Salem MASS. being number 1, and Athens Texas being number 3. I have also heard of pentagrams being in the basement of the court house, and other pentagrams being else where in Henderson county, and if you layed them out on a map it would line up to a big pentagram. I grew up in Athens and heard most of the stories here. The rock pentagrams around Henderson is a fact. There was one in the parking lot of the existing Country Club by the tennis courts but I believe they may have finally torn it down. There was also another one in front of a residence on Palestine Highway (South 19). My grandmother lived next door and my aunt lives in my grandmother’s house now and has a dress shop and hair salon on the property. The people next door that had the pentagram in the yard finally had it torn down because there was so many people driving up into their yard to check out the pentagram. I remember seeing it when I went to my grandmother’s as a child. The son of the couple that lived in that house committed suicide many years ago according to my mother. One of my grandfathers was president of the Country Club for years and said the entrance to the underground tunnels had been sealed for years. My other grandfather was the manager for several years and said when he would close up at night after everyone had left, he would hear the balls on the pool table rolling into each other. He also said he would frequently find doors unlocked and opened after he locked them. Beck’s Chapel near Crossroads and Cayuga was another site for satanic activity. I had friends that reported seeing people with robes and hoods down there but I was always too afraid to go.

One of the former owners within the last 10 years said that they had trees cleared and there was a team of grave researchers from Texas A&M that was looking for graves. They didn’t find any graves there. They dug where others had said there was suppose to be graves. He and several of his employees worked out there for a year cutting down trees, cleaning up, digging and the only thing they found was rock.
There was no openings to tunnels, no paint on trees, no candles, no wax. The cage is still there and it was clean. He said that he did find a couple of used condoms…..That’s his story on Fuller Park…..as Bob says people have embellished these stories maybe to frighten their kids from going out there.
But basically people like horrid stories to pass on and excite everyone else…lol

I believe if you track down Roland DeCastro, a long time resident of Athens and funeral director he could more then likely give you some factual evidence. If you can’t find Roland look for his son Brian who might still be in the area. They used to live down the street from me on linden drive, and Roland took us around the area and told us all the stories. If I remember correctly Roland used to keep track of all the Paranormal activity in the area, do not quote me on that, the last time I talked to either of them was in 1988 when i moved out of Athens.

My daughters & me went to Fullers again 4th of July weekend & some idiot had hung tons of those stupid Blair Witch stick people in trees all around the gravesite. 2 big ones were above the graves themselves. We tore them all down & took 4 of them home just for fun.
I hate how the graves have been desecrated. It’s a shame people buy into all the jibberish.

I have never been to fullers park,but have heard many stories since I’ve moved here. This town is the strangest I have ever lived in,but pretty. Me and my husband have been to the hospital during the day and night. We havent been inside because one,asbestos,and two one of our deputy friends said that he has arrested people for going inside of the building. I still don’t know if I would go inside even if I had permission. I have also been to the country club and seen the “table”. Very weird. And from what my husband told me,the tunnel entrance is in the basement of the country club? I would really love to investigate anything that is said to be haunted..I just don’t know anyone who is into it here.
Oh,and did I mention that at night the town seems to be darker then normal? I hate driving in Athens at night by myself.

OK I am very sensitive to the paranormal and occult happenings. I am a practicing wiccan. Still new at most spell workings but not new at sensing things. Ever since I was a little girl I could see, hear and feel things that aren’t there. When I leave my house and actually go into Athens City I feel a complete energy change. It goes from the peaceful bubble that I have created for my house and the protection spell that is on it. To various different feelings around Athens. Now this entire town to me is a cesspool of negative energy. I don’t know all the stories behind this city but all I can say is that what I see hear and feel is not right. there are so many secrets that need to be revealed it would take an entire life time to break through all the lies that encompass this city. I believe that Athens city is hiding information on ALL the happenings in this town. Not just the paranormal ones such as the hospital or the tunnels they hide a lot of stuff from us and we just let them. But anyways I just wanted to let you know that there is something strange going on here in Athens and it’s not hard to know it. if people would just get out of their bible belt preachings and their protecting little bubble they would understand that darkness is real here in Athens and as long as we sit by and let it happen it will continue. creepy place to explore would be thunder bridge which is also called monkey bridge, but recently many have just called it thunder bidge because of the sound wen cars go over it. i have been there n i have gotten some really creepy feelings and heard weird noises. it is also true that you can hear monkeys there at midnight. also driving over the bridge there is a mist tht rises and you can see monkey prints on the windshield. i have been under the bridge and found bones of large animals there and there are bits of furniture down by the train tracks tht run underneath. i go out there quite a bit but the place never quits creeping me out. not to mention a little ways down the road there is an old barn taht i swear you can hear something going on in

Everyone wants to know where the entrances to the tunnels are. The problem in answering this questions is, the entrances are for the most part, covered up and concealed now. You want to know where an entrance is? The Cain Center. There. There is one answer for you. Yes, I have personally been to it. At the time, I was young and stupid and did not travel down the tunnel, fearing “satanic cults” until I grew up and realized that was all a smoke screen for what may really be going on.
The year would have been somewhere around 1983. Like many of the young people in that small town, we were told that the “tunnels” were used for Satanic ritual (which sounds pretty ridiculous now that I’ve studied Satanism). I was taken to the entrance, which was the land that the Cain Center is on now, but at the time was a construction site. The parking lots and drives leading to them had been laid because thats what we drove on to get to the site. We had to stop the car in one such parking lot and walk on foot to the entrance which I guess was probably about 50 feet away from where we parked.
At the time, the entrance was concealed in thick brush. Once at the entrance, it was very easy to tell that this was not some primative looking tunnel used by the underground railroad, or satanists for that matter. This was a huge, elaborately masoned bricked tunnel. It was large enough to easily drive a vehicle into, and too large to be a sewer. I remembered being surprised at how well made it truly was. It was not made of the red/brown “virgin rock” from Fuller’s park, at least from what I recall of it.
Years later I tried to return but could never again find the entrance. However, here was this MASSIVE “recreation center” spanning some 38 developed acres where the entrance used to be! That is massive! All that for a little town with a population of maybe 5k-8k back then. Strange, huh? Google satellite it sometime…its MASSIVE!
I’ve been to Fullers Park. We used to scare each other there to pass the time. I’ve seen the graves and the well (yes, the well does/did exist). It didn’t strike me as anything odd. The cages, not too odd either. I’ve never seen a tunnel entrance nor had I heard one existed there until nowadays. I have never heard that the tunnels formed a pentagram shape either. I have heard that the pentagrams above ground are spaced in such a way that they create one larger one if viewed from the sky.
I have been to the pentagram too, at least one (there are supposedly 5). I stood in the middle of it actually. As a 12 year old (who had a strong interest in the occult), I made a point of trying to memorize the address. Since I have become and adult and started my own research project on Athens, I tried to return to the pentagram about 5 years ago. I could not find it (or the house I remembered it being at). I am unsure if my memory failed me in retaining the proper address, or if the pentagram was just simply gone.
The address, as I recall, was 2526 Palestine Hwy. There were huge gate pillars in the front (but the gate was never closed), much like the ones at Fullers Park. The house was set far back from the Hwy and it had a huge U-shaped driveway. The pentagram was between the house and the street on the inside of the U-shape. The pentagram was made from a reddish brown brick or rock (could have been “virgin rock”).
I viewed Justin’s documentary videos on youtube. I was excited to hear there was another Athens project besides my own as I never finished mine, and I was very close to handing my research over to him so that it would help. But once I saw his “Wiccan” source on the video, I lost all respect. I hope he finishes the project but from a more professional standpoint. Please find a better Wiccan representation than a crude lady in a KORN t-shirt. (no disrespect to KORN of course, LOVE them!). But Wiccan’s deserve more respect than that.
I contacted several professors at HCJC during that time who were more than happy to tell me of the history of the tunnels as they applied to the underground railroad. I also ran across a lady who wrote for the Tyler newspaper who had done research on the tunnels as well. So the tunnels DO exist. There is no doubt. The problem is getting to them.
I interviewed a few people who lived there and who swore to the fact that the archived newspapers had been altered to remove information vital to the reasons they exist, including one murder.
Now, some things to think about for all of you conspiracists:

I’ve read that Athens is a busy drug highway “pitstops” from Mexico into the US.
There is a huge “good ol’ boy” network there with references of people being murdered and also injected while in prison.
Satanists don’t go literally “under the ground” to perform their rituals. C’mon now. They have plenty of places above ground!
With those things being said, one may want to research underground tunnels in reference to government and also to military black ops projects. And, if lets say, the “powers that be” were…hiding….something….in the bible belt, what better way to keep it hidden than to perpetuate “big evil satanist” rumors. 🙂
And if you’re still stuck on the “satanic rituals” then research “Bohemian Grove Rituals.”

I am a resedent of athens texas. Although i am still terrified of fullers park im am very interested but weary of entering. Today i was in my world geography class and for some odd reason we started talking about it. So i have some questions..! My classmates were discussing how there was a series of tunnels in the shape of a pentagram under athens. The courthouse was the center, coleminers was a point, the country club was a point, and i dont remeber the rest… Is this true? they say it belonged to the kkk or sumthin?? And also the said there was a cave with a downward tunnel leading to the pentagram but in these tunnels were skulls and stuff. Also my teacher and his wife said that they were in fullers park and they DID see remains of animals such as Dogs, Chickens, horses, cows, and cats.. so you are right i beleive..and yes i DO think Athens is hiding something and people need to do something about it!

I am 11 years old and I know that is young, but I believe you about Athens,TX. I live here myself. I recently moved from Crossrads,TX wich is about 10 miles from here. You say that that is creepy and odd, but I have seen,heard and interacted with something way scarier in Crossroads,TX.Are you ready to hear it? At the track at the elementary school there is an old water tower. A few years back a girl cheerleader was dared to jump off of it after a homecoming game. She took the bet. When she jumped off she accidently went straight across and split her head of on a nearby barbwire fence. The girls tried to bury her but were caught. The family of the girl doesn’t deny it they say that it really did happen and that her name was Kristen. I actually know the family I am friends with thier niece. But the really freaky thing is that every single homecoming game she screams like the way she did that night. I was at a homecoming game and suddenl out of astonishment everyone heard a loud screech. The cops that were nearby told everyone to clear the game because hey had found that a young girl was just mudered insde the tower. That was no joke. She had her head wrapped up in a paper bag. I hope that thier are no really young readers here cuz this is very frightening and real.

By the way I forgot to tell you that when a girl (me) walked too close to the tower during track she got in trouble because they didn’t want anything bad to happen to me. But last halloween my sisters boyfriend agreed to take me up to the tower. When we were up there I saw that there was a rusty red rope hanging down from the top of the tower and suddenly there was a car crash just feet away from us. I never told anybody exept for my best friends and sisters. Scariest night of my life. Never doing that again! Although Halloween is almost here sooooooo maybe I will!

I will tell you that I was the bartender for the Athens Country Club for several years and the club is a very dark place and is indeed haunted late at night the past owners wife wanders the hallways and I have witnessed this first hand.There are torture chambers still in small bits in the basement if you dont believe get a job there and you will want to leave.After midnight the parnormal activity goes off the chart and I believe all the Urban legends with in Athens are connected evil lurks within this community you can sense it all around you.

Hi, my name is Kyle. I have lived in Athens for 4 years now, I worked as the bartender at the Country Club for about three months in 2008. I am very interested in “disproving” or “proving” all of the accusations in Athens. While working for the Athens Country Club I tried to get some of the oldest members to give me information on its’ secrets, but it seemed that even while intoxicated they held their ground. The only information I could get out of them was that their definitely is a tunnel under the Country Club in the basement. Someone I worked with late at night once told me that a woman was murdered in the basement but told me that was all the information they would give and said that it was smart for me to stop researching and asking questions because things tend to happen to people that ask too many questions or stick their noses in places they don’t belong. I have not stopped researching. I went to the Athens Review once and told them that I was a student at Trinity Valley Community College and that I was doing a research paper on the Country Club. They let me into the room with all of the newspaper articles that have ever been printed, at least that’s what they said. I found that their were at least twenty five years not accounted for in that room and all they would say is that they were locked in the vault, which you have to have a security clearance for. Back to Athens. Has it ever occurred to any of you that their is a high infiltration of Free Masons in this town, I feel they may have something to do with the secrets of Athens. I would like to comment on the ‘pentagrams’ that everyone’s talking about. Pentagrams are used for satanic purposes, pentacles are probably what you are seeing and they are harmless. The pentacle is the symbol for Venus the Goddess and used as a symbol for protection. The pentagram has the top of the five sided star facing downward and most of the time has a goat head in the middle. You should also make note that I have frequently seen lots of planes and helicopters going to and from the Coon Creek Club (they changed it to ‘C’ from ‘K’ to stop the speculation). I would like to sit and talk with Justin Mosley or any of the members of Sub-American productions, I have more information that I will share in person, their are just some things that don’t need to be said on this forum….To finish I would like to also add that I am what some may call a “Sensitive.” From the time I was five years old I have seen and heard, what I call, spirits or ghosts. I can walk into any cemetery and any household that is said to have paranormal activity and either see what is going on or prove that it’s nothing based off of what I see and hear. Believe what you will. I have a hard time believing people when they say they see something or hear something unless I see or hear it myself, and I like to prove that it’s something more simple than something “paranormal.” I want to put together a group of people, open minded, but ready to do extensive research on Athens and other areas alike. I have yet see where anyone has mentioned the “well” that is adjacent to the Monkey Cages. I have seen it several times and the weird thing about it is it always looks new, like it is being maintained. There are also 3 scratches on the side of that look like claw marks. I grew up here and over the years i wondered why it always looks new. It has alot of trees and bushes around it but if you stand at the entrance of the first monkey cage and look to the right you will see it. Its about 3 to 4 foot high and made out of cement. As far as the tunnels go I have yet to see any see any evidence but sure would like to know. As far as satanic rituals being carried out, who knows what has actually gone on in this town.

i was born in Athens and grew up nearby in Malakoff. I have seem the well that you were referring to. Rumor has it that the body of a woman was found in the well decades ago. I have also heard that the well is also another entrance to the tunnels. As an iceclimber, i would love to drop down into the well on a rope and find out if that is true. if anyone would like to assist me on this then let me know. or if anyone actually drops down to the bottom to check for an entrance, please let me know what you find.

The final tunnel entrance is behind the church and cemetery at Beck’s Chapel on FM 59. This is the family burial plot for my former husband’s family, and its the big family secret. While having a family reunion there, my ex and a relative claimed to see an evil black mass in the cemetery. This place always gave me the creeps. At one point we lived across the street from Beck’s Chapel and the whole area was very creepy.
As for Fuller Park, I have been in it more than once. It did not feel as “evil” to me as people claim. Interesting thing did happen. My ex took a stone from the fence and we had horrible luck until he returned it. Would love to go explore again, but I no longer live in the area.

I have been to fuller’s park many times, and i agree it is not but it is creepy. My friend and i took a stone as well and we had very bad luck. One morning we woke up they where both gone. I’ve lived in Athens my whole life and if people think the old hospital and fuller’s park are scary there actually going to the wrong places to investigate, where the truly frightening things happen are in the oldest houses down WEST LARKIN STREET! Everyone should check out what happens at those houses not only night but also day.

I am 25 years old and have lived in the Athens area my whole life…while all of the legends do have some factual basis they are not all true. I have been to the old hospital, fullers park, the country club, the court house and monkey bridge. While i was in high school me and a group of friends went to the old hospital AT NIGHT and i was scared out of my mind… we heard doors slamming, windows breaking, it was creepy!! I’ve been to fullers park during the day and night with a group of friends as well, NOTHING! It is a creepy place and you get an un easy feeling because of the stories you’ve been told but its harmless. Monkey Bridge is creepy because it needs to be rebuilt! Im SHOCKED that the city hasnt torn it down, it seems VERY unsafe, but makes for a great story i guess. I’ve roamed the country club and was unsuccesful at finding any tunnels or anything unusual about the place. Athens is a nice place with a lot of interesting history and ghost stories however a lot of them have been made up to get a good scare out of people

My mother actually works at Missy’s Haircare across from “The Old Hospital” (that’s what us locals have called it for as long as I can remember). Any time I ever go visit my mom at work I get a really strange feeling when I look in the windows from acros the street. I remember one time when I was about 9 (ill never forget this) my mom had sent me out to go get something from her car later in the afternoon close to 4:00. I had a feeling that someone was watching me. I turned around and looked at the building and saw and older gentlman looking down at me from the upstairs window on the left side of the building. I had never been more unerved. And I choose not to ever go into fuller park. I know all the stories and think it’s better not to meddle in things. I’ve felt things just driving down that road to get to a friends house many times. Last summer my truck completely broke down on that road. I got out of my truck and immediately felt the air get cold around so I got back in my truck and tried starting it, it started no proble and sped the hell out of there!! That’s only 2 of my personal experiences..

All I can say is WOW. There are some gullible people out there. Let me preface this by saying that I am Wiccan and do believe in spirits and the unknown. However, my family has lived in Athens a long time – since the late 1800’s, and been extremely active in the running of the city. My parents told me stories of going to Fuller Park when they were dating (early ’60’s) and hearing strange noises, which can be explained by natural things – wind, bats, squirrels, etc. As for the tunnels, if they are there, why are they not documented? You cannot tell me that the town as a whole is keeping this secret. People are susceptible to what others tell them. If enough people say it’s true, people will believe anything – psychology 101. For tunnels to exist in Athens, they would have to be maintained over the years, so who is maintaining them? And the rituals? Wiccans don’t sacrifice animals or people, plus, Wiccans don’t believe in the “devil”. Mrs. Averitt was not a “witch” either. As for Athens looking like a pentagram on a map, you see what you are looking for. Do ya’ll realize a pentagram also has a circle around it? Do you see the circle as well? I live in Athens Texas and have my whole life. I am now 24. I have experienced some very strange things while visiting Fuller park and driving near Monkey Bridge. I’m very interested to see this documentary. When I was in 7th grade My step mom and my two friends and I were coming home from gymnastics. We always carpooled and had just dropped our friend off at her house which is close to Fuller park. We just driving along the tiny, dark back road and a big white thing came out of the woods at our car. It stood upright appeared to be at least 7 feet tall and seemed to be floating. We all thought it was going to hit the car it was coming so fast and we all screamed. We turned around in our seats right away and there was nothing there. No bushes rustling or dust flying. It didn’t seem likely that something could just disappear like that, especially in the short second it took us all to turn and look. People have told me I’m crazy, but everyone in the car saw it too, including my step mom. I have also been in Fullers park twice and once in the monkey cages I saw a bird that had been decapitated. I also saw blood smears on the floor of the monkey cages. It felt a little creepy, but not scary. But then again, I went during the day.

While I find this all mildly amusing, if not completely strange, I don’t find much credibility in any of it. I grew up and graduated from Athens High School, and I never heard about any of this. My best friend’s mother worked for the paper and she never mentioned it either. Granted, as a teenager, I wasn’t really interested in that kind of stuff, although we used to take girls to the Goshun Cemetary up Palestine Highway to scare them (into making out, I guess)

As a followup, I actually grew up outside of Ben Wheeler, and I will tell you this; that place is so far out in the middle of nowhere that demons and ghosts would have to been lost to be out there. Finally, the old school (which burned down) was spooky as hell! That place was just flat weird! No ghosts, though. Even neater was the basement of the old Martin’s mill school that was flooded. We used to look in the windows (along the ground) and see complete classrooms with chairs, chalkboards and stuff) just sitting in knee-high (adult knee) water. Creepy! And the gym we had was an old roller rink. The floor was wavy and really neat, but not spooky at all.

I too am a long time resident of Athens, Tx, I’ve lived here for all of 2 of my 35 years, born and raised. I have heard all the stories that everyone else speaks of on here. I’ve been a Police Officer for the City for the past 5 years, I’ve been in Fuller’s Park, the Old Henderson County Memorial Hospital, the Country Club, Thunder Bridge on Monkey Road (CR 1500). I’ve been to all of these places during the day and night and have NEVER experienced any paranormal activity or satanic ritual sightings. I’ve been in the Old Hospital a 100 times at all hours of the night because we (the Police) get called there because of people being inside the hospital Trespassing. Everyone that we catch in there all says the same damn thing…”We say it or heard about it on the Internet.” Same thing goes for Fuller’s Park, been there many of times day and night because we get called there. I’m a firm believer in the “supernatural” but I think as many have said on here the stories elaborate more and more each time they are told… My family has lived here since the early 1900’s and even my elders have said stories about all these places they had heard from someone or somewhere else. NONE of them ever saw it or experienced it themselves. A couple of months ago their was a team/crew from the TV show ghost hunters who actually got permission from the present owner of the old hospital to set up all their equipment and stay in there all night. They found nothing out of the ordinary tha I’m aware of. People add their own little bit these stories they heard about and turns the story into a whole new chapter. I’m not calling anyone a liar, just saying that I believe that each persons mind leads them to believe what they want to believe and without any “hard evidence” it is in fact urban legend…

I lived there in 1985 and graduated from athens high. Yes there is a pentagram off 175 in a front yard. I lived across the street on hillside. I had heard the stories of the pentagram being formed if you put these spots on a map. However most of the sites have been filled in or removed. There used to be a big hole in the monkey cage about 10 foot deep and had a big tree trunk stuck in it then. I also recall seeing one of the tunnel entrances at that park but did not know what it was back then. It was made of virgin rock and big enough to drive a car in. Maybe they were used as bomb shelters in ww2. However they were not long enough to be used for the underground railway for slaves to escape b/c where would they go..the other side of town? I also remember my friend having a witch girlfriend that would always right letters to him backwards….so he would read them in the mirror.

WE ARE ALL WITCHES AND DO WITCHCRAFT EVERY DAY!
I know a lot of people are not going to agree with me on this, but it’s TRUE, or least I believe it’s true.
I have always heard that the word “Witch” means “Wise One”….meaning someone who knows more than others. If that is true, than we are all Witches. Every single person in the world is a Witch in some form or another. We all know and do things that other people don’t know and do. I know things you don’t know and you know things I don’t know.We all do Witchcraft every day as well. Everything you do in your life is your craft…..therefor you are a Witch doing the Craft = Witchcraft.
If you know have to cook….you’re a Witch. If you know have to work on cars…..you’re a Witch. If you know have to work on a garden…..you’re a Witch. If you know have to fix things….you’re a Witch. If you know have to make things we use in our every day lives like: shampoo, toothpaste, sunscreen, etc…etc…etc…….you’re a Witch. If you know have to build houses and other things….you’re a Witch. ……………………..Do you see where I’m going with this?
So, before you start hating on Witches……TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT YOURSELF AND YOUR LIFE, BECAUSE YOU ARE A WITCH!

I’ve found so many strange items out in the woods of Fuller Park. Bones, candles, symbols and even strange smells that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. But your comment about KKK and dog sacrifices are a little questionable at best.How about then next time you see a white robed fella out there with a pointy hat and a dead dog at his feet, you snap a few pics. We all have camera phones, there is no excuse now. happy hunting

I don’t know much about the history of that place. All I know is, when I did go out there with friends, I felt nothing but negativety. I felt like I was being watched. I’ll never go back.

The power of suggestion is truly formidable. Is it possible that everything we’ve heard is a complete lie? Could all this be stories made up to scare children into doing their chores? These are the questions I ask myself before posting my research. I’m always concerned that perhaps I’m perpetuation our ignorance by posting this stuff. That’s why you’ll rarely find something on this site that isn’t backed up by public record or personal account. You are correct in assuming that @SAM may be experiencing these negative feelings because of his\her own personal negativity. You may also be correct in the brainwashing assumption. However, that doesn’t change what he\she felt during their trip out to Fuller Park. A persons response is valid and worth investigating even if it’s tampered by personal negativity and “brainwashing”. It’s interesting on a psychological level.

Lets take a break. Google Aylesbury, England. Tunnels, rebellious local officials, statues of them, cemeteries, ghosts, satanists, its all there. One entrance to Aylesbury, England’s tunnels is from a crypt in St Mary’s Church (all stonewalled up). One wall has a hole in it, thru which is seen the back of a brick wall. The local paper created a sense of mystery about the brick wall in the 70s, but anyone with a brain cell or 3 could go outside and see that 19th century workmen planted a family tomb in a section of the tunnel and saved themselves a buncha digging. Since then the tunnels have been very fragmented and repeatedly blocked by modern construction schemes.
Furthermore the place is full of water wells. Straight deep vertical ones just like in the movies, plus shallower brick-lined pitcher-shaped ones. Unknown ones frequently get unearthed in peoples’ backyards.
Therefore, sorry but dont be surprised if Athens’ tunnels turn out to be as exciting as a dog phhhhrrrt, should they ever be openly investigated. Digging a pentangle-shaped tunnel through sand and gravel would be a major construction project, impossible to do secretly in a short time, the spoil would make a picturesque hill somewhere (duuuhhhh… where is it then?) and would rival Cedar Creek in its water holding capabilities. It would constantly fill, unless constantly pumped out. Any mysterious gushing springs near the city?

… And I would strongly advise would-be downwards rock climbers to stay out of the well by the monkey house. There could be nasty natural gasses bubbling up from the lignite, sulphur and oil deposits. If they include methane you could become a human canonball. Deaths have occurred in similar wells. Drop a video cam on a rope or something.

Agreed!!! It’s easy to get caught up in the thrill of discovery. When you find yourself staring at an obstacle and you’re thinking to yourself, “This is were I set myself apart from everyone else. Taking this risk is the part of my investigation where everyone else would turn away” make sure you clear your mind and think about your safety. You can’t exploit your great discovery if you’re in the hospital with serious injury, or dead.

I’ve heard stories all my life and recently have wanted to go investigate. If anybody could shed light on the tunnel entrances it would be greatly appreciated. Honestly, I would start with the less “sexy” locations first. I’ve found very valuable information in the local library and newspaper building. Going there will certainly test your patients because everything is so scattered and unorganized. But your greatest opportunity to find something to point you in the right direction starts there. The only other lead I could give is, talk to someone with information. Good luck out there and let me know if anything interesting turns up

tunnels tunnels tunnels… After speaking with a local geologist about the water table in and around Athens, TX, we concluded that a system of tunnels would be very hard to imagine in or around Fuller Park. The water table is just too high there and the earth is too sandy. However, He did mention that it would be possible using iron ore for support on the walls, but there was no way you could keep that construction a secret because it would require massive machinery to construct. The table is lower on the opposite side of Athens and near the city square, though. If there are tunnels, they’re likely in that area.

well, that depends… If by the story of ghosts and demons, you might be right. If your talking about the existence of Mr. and Mrs. Fuller and their role in the dark history of Athens, TX, you’re wrong. When people think of Fuller Park, they seem to think of ghost stories and witchcraft. Who am I to say whether these things are true or not? However, what I do know is the iron fist that Mr. Fuller displayed at all times. He was a very wealthy man during a period when most people were barely surviving day to day. Not only was he a loan shark, but a very talented manipulator. One of his most dubious acts was the way he “forced” the public to build a new church (the one that stands to this day). I’ll expand upon that at a later time.

I have had so much fun reading this and this spring, I want to take a group just to explore. My real reason for posting is to find out when the Wolfe-Duphorne Hospital was torn down. I was born there in 1943, but never lived in Athens. My Mother was visiting her Mother some where in the country around Athens and she went into early labor. I am working on some history and just need to know when the hospital was town down. Thanks in advance.

A few questions
1) One of the tunnel openings is supposedly at Beck’s Chapel. Beck’s Chapel is 12 miles from the Henderson County Courthouse. Am I to believe people walked 12 miles in a tunnel between Beck’s and the Courthouse? That’s close to 5 hours walking.
2) All these supposed tunnel openings (Fuller’s Park, Cain Center, Country Club, Beck’s Chapel, house across from the Old Hospital; just going by some of them named in the comments) if the center of the pentacle they form is the Courthouse, how is that possible? They all seem to be to the South of the Courthouse, where are the tunnels North, East and West of the Courthouse? To fit a pentacle pattern they would have to situated around the courthouse, on all sides, not just the South.
3) The Henderson County Hospital was in service for 40 years, countless number of people died in that building, why is it so hard to believe it could be haunted?
4) Every other comment on this site is someone claiming to know someone who has personally seen or been inside these tunnels yet no one knows where they are? Do these tunnels magically teleport around Athens so people won’t ever find them again?
5) The claims are that there are 5 tunnels that make up the pentacle, yet I have counted 12 different locations named in these comments that people claim to know for sure there’s an opening.
6) The loop that surrounds Athens is supposedly the circle that, along with tunnels, make up the pentacle, yet the loop wasn’t fully built until 2005. How did the engineers of these tunnels know that 80+ years in the future there would be a loop built to complete the pentacle?
The stories are fun, but the reality of them just seem implausible.

I was just over in Athens this summer and spent an afternoon in the woods looking for entrances based on what I’ve read. Definitely found the Fuller Park portal along with it’s storm cellar, and I have pictures/video and coordinates. They totally exist. I wish I could post them here somehow.
The entrance had a rotten old board covering it that came apart as I lifted it up. There was a rope tether leading down into it the drop (which looked long flooded and filled in now btw) and I pulled it up and it had 3 backpacks attached to it. Inside The backpacks were various young girls clothes clothing and belonging— looked to be preteen age. Bathroom supplies, a hello kitty box, a sewing kit, clothes, shoes, etc.
I was honestly expecting drugs or money or something super sketchy, but what I found was even sadder. If I had to guess, runaways were stashing belongings down there, I got a really sad and eerie feeling. My mind also went to possible sex trade or something).
Everything in the bags was heavily mildewed and ruined of course, maybe 5-10 years old or longer.
This was in the woods towards the souther end of Fuller Park, not easy at all to see at first, but not particularly difficult to hike out to.

Could you describe to me or send me pictures of what you found? I’ve always heard about an entrance being in Fuller Park but have never even seen where the old barn is or the old well. I’ve seen the cages, as well as the graves like most have.
